Geboren in San Antonio (Texas), Ausbildung an der Trinity University von San Antonio, lebt und arbeitet in New York. Von Beginn seiner künstlerischen Tätigkeit an setzt sich Donald Moffett immer wieder mit dem Thema »Aids« auseinander und beteiligt sich mit seinen Werken an Kampagnen, um auf die Aids-Krise aufmerksam zu machen. 1991-1994 war er Mitglied im Künstlerischen Beirat des New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, 1992–1994 Außerordentlicher Professor an der Graduate School of Arts der Yale University.
